Alex's English is not that good and he doesn't reinforce the techniques. They are detailed with the kids and have good technique rotation which kids need. Too much rotation with instructors resulting in inconsistent reinforcement with technique.Īs far as kids training goes, Stronghold is the best one. Throwdown: Best looking school, but sub-par instruction. Saulo: This would be my first choice, yes it's traditional, but the people you have the opportunity to roll there with is priceless. Not bad, but doesn't have the whole 'team' vibe. If you live in central or east San Diego, it's a bit far. Rodrigo: Great school, but only if you're by the beach area. I've seen enough schools to somewhat have an idea what I think is good. Bowing, shoes off at the door, etc.Ĭlick to expand. While Fabio's school might have been great back in the 90's, it wouldn't be my first choice now. Gracie Competition Team is, however, more traditional. Royler usually makes appearances a couple times a week unless he's out of town.

Gracie Comp Team Instructors Regis and Johnny area both great, detail-orientated instructors.

I made the move to Gracie Competition Team after a disagreement in viewpoints I had with Fabio (no, I will not air dirty laundry here). I feel the kids instructor Alex Brandao is an awesome instructor and the best Kids instructor in San Diego. When you train there you feel like you're part of a family. Fabio's also got tons of stories of him and the Gracies as he grew up with all those guys. But his place is definintely very relaxed and laid back. Anyone can execute moves but can you execute them with resistant subjects in a high pressure tournament environment?įabio is also very old school and traditional so if you want to float around training at different places Fabio's is NOT the place for you. I personally think belt tests are ridiculous the awesome thing about bjj imo is that you earn your belts showing your skills. He's been training for 30 yrs now so if he thinks you're worthy of promoting, no belt test necessary. There are no belt tests, you prove your skills on the mats rolling and in tournaments competing. and can tell you that he is a great instructor. There's more I'm forgetting, I'm sure of it. Tino Martinez (2x California Classic Champ, 2009 South Bay Open Champ, 2006 ADCC North American Trials Invitee, Gracie Worlds Medalist, 1-0 in mma) Ryan Oropallo (won Brown Belt Masters Worlds last year) Greg McIntyre (appeared on Tapout show and fought for WEC) Kevin Hosseini (probably mispelled that one too lol) Davis (has a school Piranha Jiujitsu in Mira Mesa) James Nielson (probably mispelled last name)Įlias Gallegos (head BJJ Instructor at Throwdown)ĭ.

Were it not for his old-school ways he'd have the strongest team in San Diego.ĭean Lister (Brown Belt under Fabio, promoted to Black Belt by fellow Fabio Santos Black Belt Jeff Higgs)įernando "Margarida" Pontes (went from blue to brown under Fabio before moving to Brazil)įernando Paradeda (Brown Belt under Fabio before moving to Brazil)Īlex Brandao (multiple time Pan Am Champ) Fabio has put out top level guys consistently. But not having a strong team and not producing great talent are two very different things. He is way old-school and that has cost him his team.
